B
- Bioaccumulation
The propensity of a substance to accumulate in exposed organsims.
Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) requires an understanding of how likely substances are to bioaccumulate in environmentally relevant species groups, whilst taking into account the influence of metabolism and excretion. Certain substances can bioaccumulate in animal tissue and current reeasrch at BEL includes the use of mussels as indicators of bioaccumulation and the use of these data to refine predictive models that can be used to improve ERAs.
- Biocides
- A Biocidal Active substance may be a single chemical, or a reaction product made in a manufacturing process.
- Biodegradation
- Assessing a chemical's potential to biodegrade helps to assess the potential impact of a chemical upon the environment
