New Approach to Inherent Biodegradability Testing

Published date :
Sep 18, 2007

Brixham Environmental Laboratory Developing New Testing Procedure

Inherent biodegradability testing can sometimes give rise to misleading results when testing with volatile compounds. Scientists at Brixham Environmental Laboratory are trialling a revolutionary test method, designed to overcome inaccuracies caused when testing these materials.

The accepted test layout for an inherent biodegradability assessment allows for head-space within the vessel. The necessary aeration of the Activated Sludge can lead to inaccuracies in determining the level of inherent biodegradation when volatile compounds are being tested.

The method being trialled at Brixham however is able to aerate Activated Sludge with a bubble-free aeration system whereby oxygen diffuses through a membrane, ensuring a far greater level of accuracy in the interpretation of results.
